Sound Expo in Wembley last week, and the amount
of software that's out there all trying to
find new ways of squashing CD-quality files
onto i-pods, etc., is quite staggering.

Cool Edit Pro 2/Adobe Audition (same thing) is
what I usually use if I want to convert .wav
to an above 44khz/128b quality .mp3
